How To Select the Correct Water Pump

Choosing the right water truck pump can be a complicated process, but United Built Parts is here to make it EASY. Follow these 4 simple steps, and we'll guide you to the perfect pump for your needs.

Step 1: Rotation Direction - Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

First, determine the rotation direction of your pump.

  • Clockwise (CW): PTO-driven pumps operated by an automatic transmission typically rotate clockwise.
  • Counterclockwise (CCW): Manual transmissions usually rotate counterclockwise, except for certain Ford transmissions.

For the best results, we highly recommend checking the rotation of the PTO itself. The PTO rotation will always be opposite the rotation of the pump. Treat hydraulic motors the same as a PTO.

Step 2: Power Source - PTO or Hydraulic Motor?

Next, decide how you will drive the pump.

  • PTO: Using a PTO shaft connected to your truck's transmission.
  • Hydraulic: Using a dedicated hydraulic motor.

Step 3: Seal Type - Mechanical Seal or Rope Seal?

Then, choose the type of seal for your pump.

  • Rope Seal: Ideal for field repairs, rope seals use graphite-infused rope packing inserts that can be replaced without disassembling the pump. They are designed to leak a small amount of water for cooling and lubrication.
  • Mechanical Seal: These seals do not leak but cannot be serviced in the field. Repairing the seal requires removing the shaft from the bearing frame and impeller.

Step 4: Connection Type - Grooved, Threaded, or Flanged?

Finally, determine how the pump will connect to your truck's plumbing.

  • Grooved: Uses a rubber seal and clamp for connection.
  • Threaded: Requires welding pipe fittings onto existing plumbing.
  • Flanged: Connections are bolted together and sealed with a gasket.
