Victaulic Style 78 Snap-Joint quick-disconnect coupling joins OGS grooved pipe with a hinged, locking-handle coupling designed for quick-disconnect service. The offered configurations combine orange-enamel ductile-iron housings with a Grade E EPDM gasket.
This selection covers the 2-1/2-, 3- and 4-inch orange couplings with Grade E EPDM gaskets and cast locking handles. The quick-disconnect design supports access to the joint, but it must never be opened while the system remains pressurized.
| Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Hinged locking handle | Provides a quick-disconnect joint for planned service access. |
| Cast handle configuration | Uses the cast locking handle supplied on these selected sizes. |
| Grade E gasket | Supports compatible water-service sealing within its stated limits. |
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer / style | Victaulic Style 78 |
| Housing | Ductile iron, ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12 |
| Finish | Orange enamel |
| Gasket | Grade E EPDM; green-stripe identification |
| Gasket temperature range | -30°F to +230°F, subject to fluid compatibility |
| Groove system | Victaulic Original Groove System (OGS) |
| Maximum working pressure | 300 psi for the offered 2-1/2-, 3- and 4-inch sizes |
Pressure and end-load limits are totals from all internal and external loads, based on standard-weight ANSI steel pipe, standard roll or cut grooved to Victaulic specifications; confirm the pipe material, wall thickness, size and complete joint design. For stainless steel, check Victaulic publications 17.01 and 17.09 rather than applying carbon-steel values directly.
| Nominal pipe size | Manufacturer part number |
|---|---|
| 2-1/2" | L024078PEA |
| 3" | L030078PEA |
| 4" | L040078PEA |
Style 78 is not designed for eccentric loading and is not recommended at the ends of concrete pumping booms or on vertical risers above 30 feet (9.1 m). Sound anchoring and lashing practices must always be followed.
Grade E EPDM is not compatible with petroleum or steam service. Confirm the complete gasket-service recommendation for the fluid and temperature. The coupling includes its specified gasket; adjoining pipe, fittings and system components are separate selections.
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Size and profile | Match nominal size, actual pipe outside diameter and OGS groove dimensions. |
| Joint function | Provide room for the locking handle and confirm the quick-disconnect arrangement fits the installation. |
| Gasket identification | Select Grade E EPDM as specified here; do not assume Grade EHP or nitrile has identical service limits. |
| Shock loading | If used in concrete pumping, include shock loads in the working-pressure assessment. Keep concrete and other foreign material out of pipe grooves, coupling keys and the gasket cavity. |
| Stainless-steel pipe | Use the required Victaulic RX rolls for light-wall/thin-wall stainless pipe and verify the applicable grooving and performance data. |
| Installation safety | Depressurize and drain the whole affected system, including isolated branches, before installation, adjustment or opening the joint. Follow Victaulic installation instructions. |
